NEW ORLEANS— The Pearl River women's basketball team returned to the court Tuesday night and utilized a suffocating defense to blast Delgado 71-37.
Head coach Scotty Fletcher has preached the need for better defensive play from his team and he felt his players heard him loud and clear against Delgado.
"We challenged our girls when we came back from the break that that was one of the biggest areas we needed to improve on and I felt that we did that tonight," Fletcher said. "The girls really bought in and it showed tonight."
The Lady Wildcats (7-2) did not waste any time in the contest, getting off to a hot start and taking 19-5 lead over Delgado (3-12) heading into the second quarter.
It was in the second frame, however, when the Lady Wildcats really started to apply the pressure. PRCC outscored Delgado 21-2 in the quarter to take a 38-7 lead into halftime.
The Lady Dolphins showed some fight in the third quarter, scoring 17 points, but that didn't slow down the high-powered offense of the Lady Wildcats.
PRCC would finish strong in the final frame of the contest closing out with a 71-37 win.
Sophomore Elexis Peyton (Jackson; Provine) had a big night for PRCC, finishing the game with 17 points.
Fletcher noted that he thinks Peyton has put it all together and it is showing on the court.
"I have seen her move at a different pace and her confidence and I think that tonight was a reflection of that," Fletcher said. "Elexis is a coach's dream. She is everything you want in a player but more importantly she is everything you want in a person."
Jakia Harper (Jackson; Provine) and Mychala "Pooh" Linzy (Clinton) also contributed big offensively scoring 11 and nine points respectively.
"That Provine connection of Elexis and Jakia really stood out tonight," Fletcher said.
Next up for the Lady Wildcats is another road trip as PRCC travels to face East Central on Thursday night at 5 p.m.
