Pearl River women's basketball adds former NJCAA All-American to staff

PRCC Assistant Coach Mikayla Etienne

POPLARVILLE, Miss. – Pearl River head women's basketball coach Scotty Fletcher has added former NJCAA DI All-American Mikayla Etienne to his 2024-2025 staff.

"It was imperative for me to find the right person and right fit to add to my staff for the upcoming season. I feel Mikayla will fit right in with Coach Mc and myself. She brings a strong playing resume and is familiar with our league and the caliber of player it takes to win within our league," Fletcher said. "She is a proven winner and comes from a great family while bringing a lot of energy which is always a plus.

"I feel she will be invaluable in assisting in recruiting, player development, and day-to-day operations within my program. Every person I spoke with about her had the same thing to say about her, which tells me she is consistent. She did an excellent job of making sure I knew and was aware that she wanted the job here at Pearl River and wanted to join the Wildcat family and her actions spoke volumes with her pursuit daily."

Fletcher announced Etienne's addition to his staff on Friday.

"My former coach at Nichols texted me and asked if I would be interested in an assistant coaching position at a JUCO. I was like, 'Yes, I want it, coach,'" Etienne said. "I emailed my resume to Coach Fletcher, and he got right back to me to visit campus. I love his energy, game style and type of play. I knew this was something I wanted to be a part of."

PLAYING CAREER
Etienne averaged 8.6 points and 2.3 rebounds per game during the 2023-2024 season at Nicholls State, earning her recognition as a finalist for the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year award.

Etienne started 20 games for the Devilettes during the 2021-2022 season, averaging 11.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Etienne did not play during the 2022-23 season to focus on completing her degree. She was an in-game commentator for the Mississippi Valley men's and women's basketball broadcasts during that season.

Etienne attended Southwest Mississippi Community College from 2019-2021. After missing the 2019-20 season due to injury, Etienne earned NJCAA Division I All-American Honorable Mention following the 2020-21 season. Etienne averaged 14.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and three assists in 2020-21 in a season that also saw her named All-Region 23 and First Team All-MACCC.
