No. 15 Pearl River grabs clean sheet win against St.Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The No. 15 Pearl River women's soccer team capped a perfect weekend at the Midwest/South Showcase Sunday morning, defeating St. Louis 2-0.

"St. Louis came out in a five at the back formation and we struggled to break it down early," head coach Henrik Madsen said. "Our play was a little too slow and predictable. Toward the end, we started connecting passes, found some quality moments, and were able to finish our chances."

Madsen feels good about where his team is as MACCC play approaches.

"I think we showcased to other leagues and teams what kind of quality we have. We work really well together and there's a good flow to everything. We need to get some players back healthy then we will have the numbers to run out there."

For much of the match, neither side could find a breakthrough as Pearl River (4-0 overall) and St. Louis (1-6) battled in the midfield and were scoreless late into the second half.

The Wildcats finally broke through in the final 20 minutes. Ida Lillebæk (Vejle, Denmark) intercepted a ball and slipped a pass to Alesha Gale (Rotherham, England), who took one touch before drilling a shot from the edge of the box into the left side of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Gale then turned provider for PRCC's second goal. After racing onto a ball over the top, she drew the goalkeeper out and squared a pass across the box to Emily Boles (Gulfport), who calmly slotted it home for the 2-0 advantage.

Pearl River's backline and goalkeeper held firm the rest of the way, sealing the clean sheet and the Wildcats' fourth consecutive victory to open the season.
