Toni Byrd

The female athlete inducted into the Hall of Fame (in 1988) was Toni Byrd of Bay St. Louis. Byrd graduated from Poplarville High School and played for the Lady Wildcats 1976-78. 

Byrd played in the Mississippi Junior College All-Star game before getting a scholarship at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond. 

At Southeastern, Byrd received the Athletic Scholastic Award for two years and was also captain of the Lady Lions' team. She made honorable mention all-state while setting team records for free throws and assists during the 79-80 season. 

Byrd played three years in the Louisiana Independent League and earned Most Valuable Player honors and the Sportsmanship Award. 

At Poplarville High School, Byrd made all-district four years, all-conference two years, and was most valuable player two years. She was a cheerleader at Poplarville High School for three years. 

Byrd has a bachelor's degree from Southeastern, as well as a master's of education. She taught five years in the Louisiana Public School System.
