POPLARVILLE — No. 20 Pearl River overwhelmed Louisiana Christian School virtually from the opening tip Thursday and cruised to a 140-78 victory at Marvin R. White Coliseum.
The Wildcats (4-0) opened the game on a 19-2 run, establishing their dominance on both ends of the court. In addition to shooting lights out on the offensive end, the Wildcats didn't allow the visiting Disciples to score their second basket until the 14:51 mark.
"It's always fun to have these kinds of games every once in a while so guys can see the ball, go to the goal and enjoy playing with each other again — especially when you're going into a tough game the next time we're on the court," PRCC coach Chris Oney said. "I thought it was pretty important to be feeling pretty good and loosen up a bit."
SCORING IN BUNCHES
The Wildcats once again shared the wealth on the scoring sheet with six players in double figures.
Cedric Brim Jr. (Tupelo; Shannon) scored a career-high 31 points thanks in large part to 7 of 12 shooting from 3-point range.
"Coming out of high school, C.J. played for his dad and his dad let him shoot the ball all the time so shooting and scoring has never been an problem for him," Oney said. "I'm proud of him and how he's worked into a team concept. He's a good player."
Brandon Rachal (Natchitoches, La.; Natchitoches Central) added 21. Kelvin Allen (Olive Branch), Langston Powell (West Monroe, La.), Eric Thornton Jr. (Canton; Murrah) and Jvari Thigpen (Jackson; Callaway) rounded out PRCC's leading scorers with 19, 18, 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Thornton also led PRCC with nine assists, while Jonas James III (Jackson; Murrah) continued to be one of the better passers around with eight. Chris Agbo (Jos, Nigeria) established his dominance around the basket, leading PRCC with 10 rebounds and three blocks.
Trevian Sylvester led LCS (1-11) with 18 points. Kabryn Allen added 17 points.
BACK IN ACTION
The No. 20 Wildcats are off until next week when they travel to Decatur to take part in the East Central Shootout. PRCC plays Coahoma on Monday and Mississippi Delta on Tuesday. Both games are at 3 p.m.
"I told the guys today that we don't go on Thanksgiving break until after the buzzer sounds Tuesday," Oney said. "This is the first year we've played during the Thanksgiving break and I've been worried about it all summer because a lot of the guys don't get a chance to go home much due to the fact we're always practicing.
"If we show up with the right mindset I think we'll be fine."
