Early run launches Pearl River men past Mississippi Delta

MOORHEAD, Miss. — The Pearl River men's basketball team used an early 15-5 run to propel it to a 78-62 road victory over Mississippi Delta Monday night. The win extends PRCC's winning streak to four straight games.

"Once again, we followed the scouting report very, very well," Pearl River coach Chris Oney said. "That's the fourth or fifth straight game that I felt like we did everything that we had talked about in the scouting report. We knew it was going to be important to play good defense because Mississippi Delta can really score the ball. I was proud of our effort on the defensive end."

FIRST HALF
Ayub Nurhussein (Hamilton, Ontario.; Toronto Basketball Academy) was knocking down the 3-pointer with ease for Pearl River (16-6 overall; 8-4 MACCC) in the early going. Nurhussein picked up his first to make the score 10-5 Wildcats over Mississippi Delta (5-17; 2-9). He was standing alone in the corner and Dylan Brumfield (Oak Grove) lasered a pass across the court for an easy catch-and-shoot 3-pointer. Nurhussein knocked down another on the very next possession, receiving a pass on the wing and slashing home the shot, extending the lead to 13-5.

Brumfield continued the run with a basket at the 13-minute mark. He acted as if he was running inside before pulling up with a fadeaway jumper for a 15-5 lead. The Wildcats had a 9-point, 19-10 lead soon after as Carlous Williams (Hattiesburg; Harrison Central) slashed inside the lane and threw down a one-handed slam.

Brown helped the Wildcats extend their lead to 27-13 midway through the first frame, scoring a string of five straight points. The first basket was a 3-pointer and then he knocked down a pair of free throws after a technical foul was issued on the Trojans.

One of the best plays of the night for the Wildcats came late in the quarter. A missed shot by PRCC bounced off the rim and looked to be an easy rebound for the Trojans. Jermahri Hill (Bessemer, Ala.; Berkmar) sprinted and snatched the ball out of the air just before the defensive rebound was secured. He then laced a pass out to the left wing to Brown who caught the pass and immediately knocked down a 3-pointer through a hard foul. The play made the score 41-23.

PRCC ended the first half of play with a 47-29 lead over MDCC.

SECOND HALF
PRCC's first basket of the second half was one that provided some energy for the Wildcat bench, using the pick-and-roll to get it done. Carlous Williams briefly set a screen, slipped by the defenders and then caught a Brumfield pass. He promptly went up and slammed down a thunderous two-handed dunk.

The Wildcats struck from beyond the arc again on the next possession, making the score 52-31. Brumfield passed up a good shot opportunity to provide Nurhussein with a great one. Nurhussein caught the pass in the corner and knocked down the shot.

With 11:57 remaining in the contest, PRCC pulled ahead 61-46. Williams was given the ball just inside the 3-point line. He quickly surveyed his options before deciding he had enough space for a jumper. The Tulsa signee quickly pulled up and slashed home the mid-range shot.

Down the final stretch of the game, Hill did whatever he wanted offensively, scoring six points all by slashing through the lane for layups. Kylan Baggett (Starkville) capped the scoring for the Wildcats after catching a pass and knocking down a quick pull-up jumper, giving PRCC a 78-62 victory in the process.
