Pearl River’s comeback bid falls short at Coahoma

CLARKSDALE, Miss. — A 21-point comeback bid fell just short for the Pearl River men's basketball team Thursday night at Coahoma. The Wildcats trailed by only two points late in the contest but fell 63-57.

GAME RECAP
Not much was happening for Pearl River (17-7 overall; 9-5 MACCC) throughout the first 10 minutes of the night as the Tigers stormed out to a massive 21-point, 29-8 lead.

Despite the sizeable deficit, the Wildcats went on a big 12-4 run over the course of the final minutes of the half to trail 33-20 at the midway point.

Pearl River didn't lay down in the second half as it slowly clawed back into the game. Dylan Brumfield (Oak Grove) brought the Wildcats within nine points at 35-26 after he slashed inside the lane and got an easy layup to fall.

Coahoma built out a 42-30 lead soon after. PRCC really began putting on pressure afterward. The Wildcats cut the deficit back to nine points after snatching an offensive rebound and dishing out to Cam Brown (Hattiesburg) for a 3-pointer. Carlous Williams (Hattiesburg; Harrison Central) knocked down a turnaround pull-up jumper on the next possession.

PRCC made another defensive stop and Williams struck again on the offensive end. A ball was rolling around the rim and was about to fall before Williams flew in from out of nowhere for a putback slam. Brown's perfect trip to the free-throw line on the following offensive stand pulled the Wildcats within three, 48-45.

PRCC pulled within two points at 50-48, but the Tigers built their lead right back out to hold a 54-48 advantage.

The score sat at 57-53 after a desperation 3-pointer from Williams. The basket came after he grabbed a loose ball on the perimeter and went up with the shot. Williams pulled the Wildcats within two points again, 59-57, with less than a minute to play as he knocked down a string of four free throws.

PRCC was forced to foul to try and get the ball back and Coahoma stretched out its lead to claim a 63-57 win.

BY THE NUMBERS
Williams finished the contest with 25 points which tied his season high. Brumfield was the only other Wildcat in double figures, adding in 13 points.
