Hunter’s 30-point outburst propels No. 19 Pearl River to victory

Cedquavious Hunter

NEW ORLEANS, La. — It was a career day for No. 19 Pearl River's Cedquavious Hunter (Como; Norht Panola) as the Cal State Bakersfield transfer dropped 30 points to lead the Wildcats to an impressive 77-64 victory over Delgado.

"He shot it really well, considering we haven't touched a ball since we lost to Gulf Coast," head coach Chris Oney said. "I didn't realize he had hit all of those shots until I saw that he was perfect from the field with 18 points at halftime. I was really happy for him and his performance."

Oney talked about his team's ability to respond following a tough loss earlier in the week.

"We played with a lot more energy," Oney said. "We had a lot more effort on defense, and we played the way that we have to for us to be successful. We forced them into bad shots and got long rebounds. We even scored in transition, which was really refreshing to see."

Pearl River (6-2 overall) wasted no time building an advantage against Delgado as the Wildcats raced out to a 25-11 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game.

PRCC continued to increase its lead over the course of the rest of first half, taking a 45-31 lead into the midway point.

The Wildcat lead swelled to 69-47 with 10 minutes remaining in the second half of play, and Pearl River continued to cruise throughout to walk away with a 77-64 victory over its Region 23 foe.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
Hunter's 30 points were the most in his Wildcat career. He did the damage on 12-for-15 shooting from the field, including a 5-for-6 barrage from beyond the arc. The sophomore added four rebounds and an assist.

Ezereke Dawson Jr. (Plant City, Fla.) and Austin Green (Sicklerville, N.J.; Timber Creek Regional) tied for second on the team with 11 points apiece. They each had six rebounds as well.

Devin Jones (Camden; Velma Jackson) appeared in his first game of 2023-24 and finished with a team-high seven rebounds.

"Not playing him until this point wasn't the plan," Oney said. "He has had a fractured toe and was out until a few days ago. It was good to see him out, running around and being physical. I think that we will need his presence once we get into conference play."

Davion James (Brandon; Northwest Rankin) led Pearl River in assists with eight and chipped in four points and four rebounds.

"He was really, really good. Davion is a versatile player. He played some point in high school," Oney said. "He's playing some positions that we're asking him to do that he hasn't really before. He's such a team player. I'm happy that he's on our team."
