GULF SHORES, Ala. — The Pearl River softball team split its two games Friday afternoon, beating Wallace State-Dothan 8-2 and dropping their second game to Wallace State-Hanceville 8-0.
GAME 1: Pearl River 8, Wallace State-Dothan 2
The Wildcats (3-3) got the scoring started in the top of the third inning when Kaitlyn Passeau (Lucedale; George County) drove in McKall Holder (Hurley; East Central) and give PRCC a 1-0 lead.
Holder added to the lead in the top of the fifth when she scored on an error to put PRCC up 2-0.
Abigail Thexton (Sumrall) followed that up with a two-run double to extend the lead to 4-0.
Wallace State (4-1) finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, plating two runs.
The Wildcats added to their lead in the top of the seventh when Taelor York (Choctaw; Clinton Christian Academy) and Holder hit back-to-back RBI singles to give the Wildcats an 8-2 advantage.
"I think the girls overall played well," head coach Christie Meeks said. "We played solid defense and our team grew on the things we asked them to this past week."
Holder led the Wildcats in hits with five and also had two RBIs.
"McKall showed out today going 5-for-5 in game 1," Meeks said. "She was consistent and refused to get out."
Passeau also had three hits and an RBI.
Hannah Embry (Vicksburg; Porters Chapel Academy) picked up the win for the Wildcats, pitching the entire game with a stat line of five hits, five walks, seven strikeouts and two earned runs.
"Hannah has pushed herself all week to finish and we think she really owned that today in Game 1," Meeks said.
Game 2: Pearl River 0, Wallace State-Hanceville 8 (6 inn.)
Wallace State (6-0) got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning taking a 1-0 lead.
They added to their lead in the bottom of third with a two-run homer to make it a 3-0 contest.
Wallace scored four runs in the bottom of fifth with a home run and an RBI single to make it 7-0.
The final run came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Wallace tacked on a run to run rule the Wildcats.
Passeau, Payton Lee (Picayune; Pearl River Central), Sydney Runnels (Seminary; South Jones) and Cassidy Bradford (Saucier; West Harrison).
"I believe we have to continue to find a way to win against very sound teams," Meeks said. "I think we needed a few timely hits. As a team we didn't help each other by not scoring when we had the opportunity too."
