POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River softball put on an offensive showcase in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Coahoma, winning 19-0 in both games.
"I was so proud that they came back today after two tough conference losses and rebounded like this," coach Christie Meeks said. "They played free today and played aggressive. All week we worked on being 'patiently aggressive' and they did a great job of that today."
GAME 1
Pearl River plated the first three runs of the contest in the home half of the first inning courtesy of a Kaitlyn Passeau (Lucedale; George County) single, a Cassady Bradford (Saucier; West Harrison) RBI double, and a Sydney Runnels (Seminary; South Jones) sacrifice fly. The Wildcats pushed six more runs across in the second inning. Passeau crushed a 1-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for a three-run homer. An RBI triple by Abigail Thexton (Sumrall) and an Aunie Rethmeyer (Belle Chasse, La.) single gave the Wildcats a 9-0 lead. Erin Daughtry (Vancleave) and Makiya Hunter (Jackson; Clinton Christian Academy) went back-to-back for their first career home runs in the third inning. Passeau belted her second home run of the game in the frame to walk-off the Tigers 19-0.
Passeau led the team in hits and RBIs with three and six.
"My approach at the plate is see ball, hit ball. I like to keep it simple. I knew I needed to take advantage of having runners on today," Passeau said.
Hunter, Bradford, and Taelor York (Choctaw; Clinton Christian Academy) had two hits each. Daughtery finished with three RBIs.
Hannah Embry (Vicksburg; Porters Chapel Academy) earned the win in Game 1, pitching three one-hit innings while striking out seven.
GAME 2
The Wildcats continued the offensive onslaught in Game 2, plating six runs in the first inning. A two-run single by Daughtery followed by a Hunter (Jackson; Clinton Christian Academy) RBI single plated the first three runs. An Emily Rigney (Waynesboro, Miss.; Wayne County) two-run double increased the Wildcat lead to 6-0. In the second inning, Daughtery blasted a ball over the left-field wall for her second home run of the day. The Wildcats plated eight runs to give the Wildcats a 15-0 advantage. The inning was highlighted by a Hunter grand-slam over the centerfield wall. Pearl River pushed their last four runs of the game across in the fourth inning, capped off by a Payton Lee (Picayune; Pearl River Central) two-run double.
Kambryn Chaisson (Picayune), Rigney, and Daughtery tied for the team lead with three hits. Hunter led the team with five RBIs. Hannah Miller (Kokomo; West Marion), Madi Waters (Laurel; West Jones), and Thexton each walked twice.
Madelyn Burch (Franklinton, La.; Bowling Green) made her season debut, pitching five innings while striking out nine. She only surrendered two hits.
"I'm very proud of her. She was released by the doctor on Thursday, so this was her first time being able to pitch. She spun the ball tight and had the confidence that you need to be successful," Meeks said.

Pearl River will return to the field on Tuesday in a doubleheader at Copiah-Lincoln. The games will begin at 4 p.m.
