No. 17 Pearl River stumbles against Northwest Florida

NICEVILLE, Fla. — The No. 17 Pearl River softball team hit the road Tuesday to take on NJCAA Division I foe Northwest Florida. The Wildcats dropped both games against the raiders losing the first 11-1 and the second 6-3.

"I feel like our most consistent things that we have relied on all year like pitching and defense were off today. We made too many errors and did not hit our spots," head coach Christie Meeks said. "We have a lot of things to continue to grow on tomorrow and Thursday before the weekend. As a team, we will learn from these two losses."

GAME ONE
The Raiders jumped out early and used the momentum to propel them to a large lead.

The Wildcats found themselves down 11-0 entering the fifth inning, but were able to scratch a run across after Cassady Bradford (Saucier; West Harrison) hit a ground ball that was bobbled by the second baseman, allowing Emily Rigney (Waynesboro; Wayne County) to score. The Wildcat rally was turned away and the Raiders took game one 11-1.

Keigan Pearson (Carriere; Pearl River Central), Julianah Overstreet (Vancleave), and Rigney all had a hit on the afternoon.

GAME TWO
Brinson Anne Rogers (Statesboro, Ga) stepped into the circle for the Wildcats in game two and found herself in trouble early in the first as the Raiders took an early 5-0 lead.

Dallyn Nance (Nanih Waiya) got the Wildcats on the board in the second with an RBI triple, driving in Makiya Hunter (Jackson; Clinton Christian Academy). Immediately after, Nance crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Pearl River's rally ended, though they cut into the deficit 5-2.

From there, a pitcher's duel ensued as Rogers settled in to keep the Wildcats in the game.

Northwest Florida grabbed an important insurance run in the fifth inning to go ahead 6-2.

The Wildcats started the top of the seventh with a leadoff double by Overstreet who came around to score on an Aunie Rethmeyer (Belle Chasse, La) single, bringing the Wildcats within three.

The rally fell short, and the Raiders won game two 6-3.

Rogers rebounded after a slow start. She pitched six innings and struck out 11.

Overstreet collected two hits and scored a run.

Nance had a hit, an RBI, and a run scored.

Rethmeyer had a pinch-hit RBI single.
