No. 14 Pearl River can't hold on at No. 4 Copiah-Lincoln

WESSON, Miss. — The No. 14 Pearl River softball team had the lead in each part of its road doubleheader against No. 4 Copiah-Lincoln but couldn't hold on. The Wolves took the opener 10-2 in six and the nightcap 9-2.

GAME ONE
Pearl River (30-11 overall; 14-4 MACCC) put Copiah-Lincoln (32-4; 19-1) on its heels early on, scoring two first-inning runs. With Kai Goodman (New Orleans, La.; John Curtis) and Natalee Eaves (Louisville; Choctaw Central) in scoring position, Cailey Pervel (Carriere; Pearl River Central) delivered from the middle of the order by driving a two-run single into center field, 2-0.

CLCC got one run back in the bottom of the second and could have made it two runs if not for the strong arm of Wildcat center fielder Alexa Womack (Prairieville, La.; Dutchtown). She scooped up the RBI single and fired home to cut the tying run down at the plate, 2-1.

Unfortunately for Pearl River, the Wolves took the lead on a two-run single an inning later, 3-2. The Wildcats struggled to get baserunners on over the next few innings, and CLCC tacked on five runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to run-rule PRCC, 10-2 in six.

Pervel was the highlight of the game for PRCC on the offensive side, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs. PRCC used four pitchers in the contest. Lizzie Meeks (Ripley; Pine Grove) threw 2 2/3 innings, Gracey Harbour (Batesville; South Panola) tossed 1 2/3 innings, Goodman faced four batters and Ballard Kraft (Liberty; Amite School Center) threw an inning.

GAME TWO
CLCC took the lead first in the nightcap, turning a leadoff double into a run in the first inning, 1-0. Pearl River manufactured a response in the second inning. Maeli Ben (Conehatta; Newton County) singled and moved to second on a passed ball. That's when Caitlyn Riche (Walker, La.) delivered, sending an RBI single into the gap, 1-1.

Ana-Grace Garcia (Baton Rouge, La.; St. Joseph's) retired the Wolves in order in the second to send PRCC back to the plate for the go-ahead run. Goodman singled, moved to second on a Copiah-Lincoln miscue and took third on a groundout. Reigning MACCC Player of the Week, Eaves, delivered for a second time on the day, smacking a single back up the middle for an RBI, 2-1.

Things unraveled for PRCC in the fourth as the Wolves scored six runs on five hits, a walk and an error to take the lead. The stretch included a three-run homer, 7-2. The Wolves added a two-run blast in the sixth to move ahead 9-2 before closing things down in the seventh to win.

Goodman and Eaves were the only Wildcats with multiple hits, each grabbing two. Garcia threw all six innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits and four walks. She punched out four.
