BATON ROUGE, La. — The Pearl River Lady Wildcats are starting to build momentum on both sides of the ball.
The progress was never more evident than on Saturday when PRCC picked up a lopsided 78-37 win at Baton Rouge (7-11).
The Lady Wildcats (9-4) played a first quarter against stiff competition taking a 13-12 lead into the second quarter.
Pearl River added to its lead going into half-time with a 27-21 lead.
It was in the second half when the Lady Wildcats really started to come alive.
The Lady Wildcats went on a monstrous 33-5 run to take a 60-26 lead into the final frame of the contest.
Even with a large lead PRCC did not let up heading back to Poplarville with a 78-37 win.
The Lady Wildcats stepped up defensively, which is something head coach Scotty Fletcher preaches.
"I thought defensively we played at a high premium which is going to be our standard and our DNA each and every night," Fletcher said. "That's a very good team we played and we got down early in the first quarter but we settled down and made some shots, defensively in the second half we went to the zone and I don't think they were expecting that."
While PRCC played a tremendous defensive game, they also had some great contributions on the offensive side of the ball.
Gabby Brown (Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; Choctaw) led the team in scoring with 20 points and shot 6-for-8 from the 3-point line.
"Gabby Brown was the old Gabby Brown. She's been in a little bit of shooting slump so I told her tonight to just focus on defense and I promise the shots will go in," Fletcher said. "She's been spending that extra time in the gym but the confidence she had tonight on the defensive end I think allowed her to have a big game for us offensively,"
Alanna Smith (Picayune) also came up big on the floor with a season-high 17 points.
"Alanna played her best game of her career today. She was absolutely exceptional and we needed that from her," Fletcher said.
Elexis Peyton (Jackson; Provine) had a solid game as well scoring eight points while grabbing 12 rebounds.
Up next for the Lady Wildcats is a home game against rival Mississippi Gulf Coast on Tuesday night at Marvin R. White Coliseum.
"I said two weeks ago that we barked but we had to learn to bite and I definitely think we are doing that," Fletcher said. "These girls are all in and I am very very proud."
