Pearl River officially launches women's golf program

PRCC women's golf coaches - Danny and Shirlene Manley

POPLARVILLE, Miss. – Pearl River is excited to officially announce its inaugural women's golf program.

The River announced on Monday it has hired Danny Manley as an assistant golf coach for its women's program. Shirlene Manley also joins the staff as a volunteer assistant coach.

"They are all about teaching and instructing. He is very knowledgeable about the game, very golf savvy," Pearl River head golf coach Coby Scarborough said. "They want to make sure we do things the right way and put PRCC golf on the map."

Danny Manley will provide the staff with over 30 years of playing and coaching experience and leadership skills attained in professional program management and compliance positions. Manley feels the mental aspect of golf can translate into other aspects of the athletes' lives.

"Golf is 100 percent mental," Manley said. "There is some athleticism involved, but after that, it is 100 percent mental."

Shirlene Manley looks to tap into over 30 years of experience as an educator and golfer to help grow the Wildcat golfers as both athletes and young people about to enter the world.

"What excites me is working with younger people," she said. "If you can do anything to encourage young people in their college and athletics career, it is a good thing."

Both Danny Manley and Shirlene Manley are excited to be a part of the inaugural season of the Pearl River women's golf team.

"I like ground floor opportunities; the ability to showcase PRCC talent throughout the state and region," Danny Manley said. "There is always a need for golf. This program will definitely help the high school programs. The golfers will have somewhere to continue their golf careers."

For both Danny and Shirlene, this also serves as an opportunity to return home. Danny is a 1988 graduate of Pearl River, and Shirlene is a 1989 graduate.

"Life is one big circle. Right back to where we were," Danny said.
