No. 12 Pearl River comes up short at No. 4 Jones College

ELLISVILLE, Miss. — The annual "Cat Fight" on the soccer pitch was exactly the type of battle a fan could expect Friday evening. No. 12 Pearl River fought hard until the end but came up short against No. 4 Jones College, 2-0.

"We always knew it was going to be a tough one against Jones," head coach Henrik Madsen said. "They're very organized and have very good players. I was really happy with my girls. I thought they really stuck to our game plan."

The Bobcats (10-0 overall; 5-0 MACCC) took the lead in the 30th minute on a mistake by the Wildcats (8-4; 4-3). A ball rolled out wide, and a few Pearl River players followed it out, leaving JC players open in the box. A good cross inside was then headed home, 1-0.

It felt like Pearl River dominated possession in the second half of the match, consistently pushing its way into Bobcat territory but was unable to get on the board.

Jones College picked up its second goal on a counter in the 82nd minute. The Wildcats were a bit unlucky. Celine Grothe (Lübeck, Germany; Carl-Jacob-Burkhard) dove to her left to make a save. The ball bounced back out, and another shot attempt was sent off the crossbar, then off Grothe and back out. Finally, the third shot attempt was slotted home to extend the lead, 2-0.
