No. 13 Pearl River's season ends in Gulf South District Final

ELLISVILLE, Miss. — The No. 13 Pearl River women's soccer team's remarkable 2023 campaign came to a close Sunday evening as the Wildcats fell 3-0 to No. 3 Northwest in the Gulf South District Championship match.

"We are really, really proud of this group of girls and the toughness and resiliency they showed throughout the season," head coach Henrik Madsen said. "We had some learning to do, and they did well with it. Our sophomores really came in and did a fantastic job of being leaders. Everything was so positive this year."

Madsen talked about the growth that he continues to see in his program.

"It's been nice to see us get into the top 10 every year — especially as tough as this conference is," he said. "It's a gauntlet to try to get through, and we just keep getting closer and closer. Hopefully, the future holds good things."

Pearl River now waits to see if it is the recipient of an at-large bid to the National Tournament. The entirety of the bracket will be released on Tuesday.

MATCH RECAP
Pearl River (12-6-1 overall) developed a chance pretty quickly as Chloe Ezell (Ocean Springs) fired a ball toward the right side of the goal that the Northwest (20-1) goalkeeper dove to stop.

A few minutes later, Ally Stiglets (Hattiesburg; Oak Grove) received a fantastic ball down the left side of the pitch from Ezell. The freshman attempted to go for a goal but sent it high and out of play.

Northwest (20-1 overall) scored its first goal of the evening in the 14th minute and carried a 1-0 advantage into the midway point.

Twenty-one minutes into the second half, the Rangers doubled their advantage to put Pearl River's back against the wall and weren't done there as they added a final goal in the 78th minute.

The Wildcats tried to create chances down the stretch, but nothing materialized as they fell to the Rangers.
