RAYMOND, Miss. — The No. 12 Pearl River women's soccer team dominated Hinds from start to finish Tuesday night, bagging an incredible nine goals on the way to a 9-1 bashing of the Eagles.
The match was the third time PRCC scored at least nine goals in a game on the year.
"There was a good level of concentration from the girls and a lot of movement off the ball," head coach Henrik Madsen said. "We had good quality passing when we were in possession. We started really well and put the game to bed in the first 15 minutes; then, we maintained the level. It was a good night for everyone."
The Wildcats had eight different goal-scorers in the match.
"It just shows the quality of the whole team," Madsen said. "It's not just one player that everyone relies on. Our whole squad is quality, and everyone contributes to the team."
The first goal of the night for Pearl River (8-3-2 overall; 6-2-1 MACCC) against Hinds (3-11-2; 1-8) came six minutes into the match as the Wildcats scored on a double assist. Haylie Alvarez (Gulfport; St. Patrick) sent a long cross into the box that was headed back to the middle by Holly Jones (Liverpool, England). Abby Badurak (Gulfport) followed it with a header of her own to go ahead 1-0. For Badurak, it was her sixth consecutive match to score at least one goal.
"Abby is rounding into form," Madsen said. "This is what we expected when we signed her, so seeing her get her sharpness and fitness back is exciting."
Jones picked up another assist in the 12th minute to extend her MACCC lead to 13. She dished off to Chloe Ezell (Ocean Springs), and the midfielder did the rest, finishing off the chance, 2-0.
"Holly sees the game really well," Madsen said. "She picks some good passes, and the understanding between her and her teammates continues to improve. That's a good reason she gets all these assists."
Alvarez created another assist in the 25th minute, aiding on a Frederikke Nielsen (Randers, Denmark) goal. Two minutes later, Nielsen became the provider. She sent a ball out to the left side of the box, and Jones dribbled around a defender before placing a shot into the net at the near post, 4-0.
Badurak made it a brace in the 40th minute, earning her 11th goal of the year off an Ezell assist. After 45 minutes were up, PRCC held a 5-0 advantage over HCC.
The attacking success didn't change for the Wildcats in the second half, as Alexis Conard (Wiggins; Stone) sent a shot into the back of the net just one minute in. Hinds scored its lone goal of the match immediately after to break PRCC's clean sheet, 6-1.
Pearl River scored three more goals before the night ended, 9-1. Alvarez grabbed her first goal of the match in the 52nd minute, and Alli Shemper (Biloxi) followed in the 70th. The final PRCC goal of the match came in the 77th minute, thanks to Yazmin Humphrey (Lucedale; George County).
UP NEXT
The Wildcats return to PRCC Soccer Complex Friday for a 5 p.m. match against rival Jones College.
"They'll be typical Jones," Madsen said. "They are always well-organized. It will be a tough one on Friday, but it will also be a lot of fun."
