No. 10 Pearl River women fall in Gulf South District Semifinal

ELLISVILLE, Miss. — No. 10 Pearl River women's soccer gave a complete effort from start to finish Thursday evening against No. 5 Holmes but came up short in the Gulf South District Semifinal, 4-0.

"The girls worked really hard like they have all season," head coach Henrik Madsen said. "We started off well and created some chances. They caught us on a counter and were just sharper in front of goal.

"They scored their four chances, and we missed our four chances. It was a fairly even game overall. We just weren't sharp enough."

Pearl River will have to wait for Tuesday to find out if it has been selected as an at-large bid in the NJCAA DII Soccer Championships. The bracket will be announced via the NJCAA Network at 1 p.m.

"We hope we get the at-large bid," Madsen said. "The resume is easily there if we go on quality wins and rankings. That's not how it always goes; we have learned."

Pearl River (11-4-2) took it to the Bulldogs (15-3-2) in the first nine minutes of the night, pushing right down the field and creating chances. Unfortunately, none of the early opportunities resulted in a goal.

Holmes caught Pearl River by surprise for its first goal of the night, turning a counterattack into a goal in the 10th minute. The Bulldogs stunned the Wildcats five minutes later, making it a two-goal lead 15 minutes into the night, 2-0.

Pearl River narrowly missed a chance to get back into the match in the dying moments of the first half. A ball was sentinto the box, and Jessica Lawrence (Ocean Springs) was charging inside. The forward threw her foot out, but the ball was just wide and went out of play.

The Wildcats started the second half aggressively, creating a chance two minutes in. Abby Badurak (Gulfport) looped a shot toward the goal that the Holmes goalkeeper punched off the crossbar. Before any nearby Wildcats could charge in, she quickly dived on the loose ball to end the opportunity.

The Bulldogs made it a three-goal advantage in the 62nd minute. Despite PRCC living on HCC's side of the field for the final 15 minutes of the night, the Wildcats couldn't get a ball into the back of the net.

Holmes added a fourth and final goal in the 86th minute, securing a 4-0 victory.
