No. 18 Pearl River sweeps doubleheader for 15th consecutive win

POPLARVILLE, MISS. —No.18 Pearl River volleyball continued its impressive run Monday as it quickly put away the Mississippi University for Women 2-0 (25-19, 25-10) and 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-19). The Wildcats extended their win streak to 15 matches in the process.

PEARL RIVER 2, MISSISSIPPI UNIVERSITY FOR WOMEN 0.
SET ONE
After falling behind at the beginning, Pearl River (26-3 overall) went on to claim the next five points to make the score 5-1.

Mississippi University for Women (1-15) didn't let the four-point deficit affect them, clawing within one point at 5-4.

The Wildcats went on another five-point run shortly after highlighted by kills from Leah Draine (Mobile, Ala.; Mattie T. Blount) and Leighton Willoughby (Brandon; Northwest Rankin) as well as an ace by Payton McKerchie (Vancleave)

The Owls got a point back, but the Wildcats instantly grabbed the momentum back asJasmine Burdine(Biloxi) blasted a kill into the far-right corner for a kill.

The Burdine kill along with three other Wildcat points made the score 13-6.

MUW then went on a 5-0 run of its own that made the score 13-11.

The Wildcats picked up the pace afterward, taking seven points in a row to make the score 20-11. In the 7-0 run, Pearl River picked up kills from Hannah Burks (Ocean Springs; Vancleave) and Chloe Paske (St. Martin).

The Owls tried to fight back, but the Wildcats put an end to the set, winning 25-19.

SET TWO
Pearl River came out of the gate on fire in set two. With Julianah Overstreet (Vancleave) serving, the Wildcats took the first eight points, two of which came from service aces.

MUW scored a point, but two PRCC points made the score 10-1 in the early going.

The Owls cut the lead to 13-7, but from that point forward it was all Wildcats.

Pearl River took seven points in a row while Sydney Salter (Vancleave) was serving to make the score 20-7. Two service aces by Salter, a McKerchie kill, and a Burdine kill aided the run.

The Owls grabbed two points back, but the Wildcats put the set to bed shortly after with the help of an Annah Marshall (Lake Cormorant) ace, winning 25-10.

SET ONE

In the second match of the doubleheader, the Wildcats and Owls played a best-of-five.

PRCC took four of the first five points of the set to take a 4-1 lead. After two MUW points, the Wildcats claimed three of their own to make the score 7-3.

The teams eventually battled out to a 13-8 PRCC lead.

Three Pearl River points were then matched by three Mississippi University for Women points to make the score 16-11.

The Wildcats went on another impressive 7-0 run that made the score 22-12. The run was capped off by a Jones kill and an Allison Carpenter (Ocean Springs) service ace before Pearl River put away the set 25-15.

SET TWO
The beginning of the second set made it look as if it would be back-and-forth throughout the duration with the teams eventually battling out to a 5-5 tie.

After eight consecutive Wildcat points made the score 13-5, MUW got one back to make it 13-6.

Pearl River then added in nine more points to take a commanding 22-6 lead. The run, which Amy Wright (Palm Bay, Fla.; Melbourne Central Catholic) started with her serving, received help from Willoughby and

Overstreet kills as well as a diving dig from Salter that led to a point.

The Wildcats eventually closed out the second set with a big 25-10 win.

SET THREE
PRCC opened up the third set of the match by taking a 6-3 lead. A few points later the Wildcats lead 10-7. After Diamond Jones (Gonzales, La.; East Ascension) smacked a ball at an MUW player for a kill, the Wildcats followed by it up by taking three more points to take a 12-9 lead.

The teams eventually found themselves deadlocked at 15 before the Owls grabbed a 17-15 lead.

A Wright ace sandwiched between two Willoughby tips put PRCC back on top 18-17.

The Wildcats built up a 22-19 before putting away the set 25-19.

The Wildcats return to action Wednesday as Louisiana College comes to town for a 5 p.m. match. The match will serve as Pearl River's sophomore day and will be livestreamed atPRCCMedia.com/gold.
