ELLISVILLE, Miss. — The Pearl River volleyball team struggled to find its rhythm Wednesday night against rival Jones College, falling to the Bobcats 3-0 (21-25, 17-25, 19-25).
"Jones did a good job of exposing us when we showed any sign of weakness, and once they got us there, it was difficult to rally back and make up those points," head coach Haley Chatham said. "We competed, though, and I am glad for that. I'm glad we will get to see them again soon."
Pearl River (10-21 overall; 4-4 MACCC) found itself behind big in the opening set, trailing 9-3 after the match's first 12 points against Jones College (21-6; 6-2). After a mistake by the Bobcats, Skyla Rann (Gonzales, La.; East Ascension) entered the match and made an immediate impact by knuckling a ball over the net for an ace.
The play sparked a run by the Wildcats as they went on to tie the match up at 14 apiece following a Morgan Mears (Hurley; East Central) smash over the net. The teams traded points all the way to a one-point 21-20 deficit, but JC pushed forward to win 25-21.
Set two was another back-and-forth affair, with the teams tying five times in the early going. The Wildcats kept it close to 12-10 before the Bobcats used a big run to take a dominant 22-14 lead and eventually took the set 25-17.
Pearl River looked to be in control in set three, jumping out to a 4-0 lead that soon became 9-4 after a Madi King (Leakesville; Greene County) block. Unfortunately for PRCC, Jones College rallied back to even up the match at 15 apiece and went on to take the set 25-19.
