Pearl River volleyball closes out home schedule against No. 17 Enterprise State

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River volleyball closed out its home schedule Friday night against No. 17 Enterprise State, falling 3-0 (23-25, 22-25, 17-25).

Pearl River (11-22 overall) got off to a hot start against Enterprise State (23-8) by scoring the first seven points with the help of two kills from Morgan Mears (Hurley; East Central), two kills from Avery Wheat (Gonzales, La.; East Ascension) and one by Peyton Hoffmayer (Ocean Springs).

Eighteen points into the match, PRCC was up 13-5 on the Boll Weevils. With the Wildcats holding a 15-8 advantage, Enterprise State started to play like a ranked team, scoring 11 of the next 12 points to move in front 19-16.

The Wildcats traded points late to keep it close, but ESCC closed out the comeback victory, 25-23.

Set two was nearly a copy of the first set, with Pearl River leading early in the set before Enterprise State found its footing. After PRCC went up 8-5, ESCC battled back to even things up at nine apiece.

PRCC briefly pulled back ahead, but once the Boll Weevils tied things up at 13-13, they started to pull away. The Wildcats made some ground late, but Enterprise State earned a 25-22 victory in set two.

ESCC had a different look in the third set. Although the teams traded points early, the Wildcats soon found themselves in a 14-7 hole. Back-to-back kills by Annalaura Williford (Bay St. Louis; Our Lady Academy) and Madison Butler (Biloxi; D'Iberville) gave PRCC a shot of momentum, but ESCC remained in front 14-12.

Pearl River kept it close throughout the middle portion of the set, but a six-point run was more than enough for the Boll Weevils to grab momentum and win the set 25-17.
