Pearl River’s Noah Mitchell named MACJC Defensive Player of the Week

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River linebacker Noah Mitchell (Leakesville; Greene County) has been named the MACJC Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

Mitchell was also named Pearl River's Forrest Health Wildcat of the Week on Monday.

The honors come on the heels of what's believed to be a record-setting performance in Pearl River's 25-3 loss at No. 1 Gulf Coast.

Mitchell was a big reason why the Wildcats (2-6 overall) held MGCCC to just six points in the first quarter.

Mitchell finished the game with a career-high 23 total tackles, including 11 solo stops. The number is the highest single-game mark by a Wildcat since at least the 2015 season, according to PRCC records.

Mitchell also recorded two tackles-for-loss, one pass breakup and one quarterback hurry in the game.

The freshman has been one of the top tacklers not only in the MACJC but also the NJCAA all season.

Through seven games, Mitchell's 11.4 tackles-per-game lead the state and are third nationally.

Mitchell's 80 tackles are already a single-season high-water mark for Pearl River, dating back to at least 2015.

HONORING WILDCATS

Mitchell is the third Wildcat to receive a MACJC honor this season.

Quarterback Terrence Humphrey (Clarksdale) was named the MACJC Offensive Player of the Week following PRCC's 35-31 win at Itawamba.

Kicker Gayden Hence (Hattiesburg) was named the MACJC Special Teams Player of the Week following his late-game heroics in PRCC's 17-16 Homecoming win over Southwest.
