POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Three members of Pearl River's 2019 football squad have been named All-MACJC, the league announced Tuesday.
Linebacker Noah Mitchell (Leakesville; Greene County) and defensive back Darrell Luter Jr. (Hattiesburg; Oak Grove) both landed on the MACJC Second Team defense. Special teams standout Gayden Hence (Hattiesburg) earned a spot on the MACJC Second Team offense.
NOAH MITCHELL
Mitchell made an immediate impact as a freshman. Despite missing a game due to injury, Mitchell still led the conference in the regular season with 91 total tackles. His 11.4 tackles-per-game average ranked fourth in the country. Mitchell also recorded three sacks and seven tackles-for-loss in his standout collegiate debut.
Mitchell's most impressive performance came at No. 1 Gulf Coast, when he racked up 23 total tackles. The stops are the most by a Wildcat defender in a single game since at least 2015. For his effort, Mitchell was named both the MACJC and NJCAA Defensive Player of the Week. His 91 tackles on the season are also a program high dating back to at least 2015.
DARRELL LUTER
Luter was a reliable defender for the Wildcats in '19. The sophomore made 19 tackles and led Pearl River with eight pass breakups. He also pulled in an interception. Luter's eight PBUs tied him for sixth in the conference.
GAYDEN HENCE
Hence found a way to impact games in a number of ways this season. The freshman was one of the country's top punters. His 39.1-yards-per-punt ranked 13th nationally. His 2,503 total yards on 64 punts also ranked second in the NJCAA. Additionally, Hence led PRCC with 25 points on 10 of 13 extra-point attempts and 5 of 8 field goal attempts.
Hence was named the MACJC Special Teams Player of the Week following PRCC's 17-16 win over Southwest. Not only did Hence kick and recover an onside kick late in the contest, but he also booted the game-winning 21-yard field goal with 35 seconds remaining in the contest.
