Pearl River football standouts ink at the next level

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Seven Pearl River football standouts signed to play at the next level during the early signing period. An eighth Wildcat also committed to a four-year school with the intention of signing in the spring.

This year's bounce-out signees are D'ezekius Chapman (Lake), Corbin Lewis (Jayees; Lawrence County), Darrell Luter Jr. (Hattiesburg; Oak Grove), Terrance "Tank" Monroe (Petal), Darrell Sims Jr. (Bassfield; Jefferson Davis), Sirvares Snow (Newton) and Jaylan Wilson (Bay St. Louis; Bay). Both Chapman and Luter signed with South Alabama; Sims signed with North Alabama; Monroe and Lewis are headed to West Alabama; and both Snow and Wilson will transfer to Delta State. Additionally, Radonte Womack (Prentiss; Jefferson Davis) committed to Bethune-Cookman.

CHAPMAN

Chapman was the first verbal commitment for USA coach Steven Campbell.

"I'm blessed for the opportunities that Pearl River has given me and I will always be forever grateful for it," Chapman said. "I am excited to start a new chapter at the University of South Alabama. They have treated me like family ever since we first got in contact and I'm going to do whatever I can for the USA program."

The 6-foot-3, 295-pound Chapman was a force in the middle of the defensive line for PRCC over the last two years. As a freshman he recorded 22 total tackles with 2.5 sacks, four tackles for loss. This season, Chapman recorded 35 tackles with one sack and six TFLs.

LEWIS

The 6-foot-6, 280-pound Lewis was a two-year starter for the Wildcats in the trenches. The Jayees native proved to be an athletic anchor for Pearl River along the offensive line and was active both pass protecting and run blocking.

LUTER

Luter broke onto the scene as a freshman a year ago, breaking up six passes with a team-high two interceptions along with eight tackles. He once again proved to be a shutdown cornerback in 2019, leading PRCC with eight pass breakups to go along with one interception and 19 tackles.

For his efforts, the 6-foot-1, 181-pound Luter was named to the All-MACJC Second Team Defense.

"I am truly honored and blessed for the opportunity that God has given me," Luter said of signing with USA. "PRCC has believed in and helped me to grow, not only as a football player but also as an individual. I'm very excited to start my journey with the University of South Alabama and I can't wait to begin.

"I'm glad to be Jag."

MONROE

The 6-foot-4, 330-pound "Tank" came on late as a freshman and then carried over his early performance into a standout sophomore campaign. After making 14 tackles with one TFL as a freshman, Monroe recorded 26 tackles with a TFL this season.

"I'm glad West Alabama offered me and I'm going to give them everything I've got when I get to campus," Monroe said.

SIMS

Sims proved to be a tackle machine during his two seasons in Poplarville. After registering 22 tackles with one TFL as a freshman in 2018, the 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker was among PRCC's defensive leaders this season. Sims finished the 2019 season with 59 tackles — good enough for third on the squad. Sims also led the Wildcats with nine tackles for loss and tied for the team lead with two forced fumbles and five sacks.

"First off I just want to say thank you God for this, because without you none of this would have been possible. I also want to thank all the coaches and staff for believing in me and giving me an opportunity of a lifetime and I'm always going to be forever thankful," Sims said. "Thanks PRCC for letting me experience two of my best years here."

SNOW

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Snow proved to be a versatile asset for the Wildcats during his two seasons at PRCC.

As a freshman defensive back, Snow recorded 26 tackles with one interception and six pass breakups. He also returned nine kicks for 126 yards. He broke out as a sophomore, racking up 43 tackles. He also had one TFL, one fumble recovery for a touchdown, one interception and four PBUs.

"Throughout this whole recruiting process, I felt doubt from almost every school that had offered me a scholarship. Delta State came along at the last minute and offered me and I felt every need to commit to them," Snow said. "They are a winning program, have a nice facility, great coaches and I also get to play with my brother one last time."

Snow also reflected on his time at Pearl River.

"PRCC meant the world to me. The friendships I had with the people there turned into family. From the day I stepped foot on campus during my recruiting visit, I knew my heart was set and I had to commit," he said. "I want to thank Coach (Ted) Egger and the staff he had for believing in my talents and not giving up on me when I was at my lowest. For that I can truly say I love you guys and the people that I met at PRCC.

"I will forever cherish Pearl River and be a big fan of the Wildcats."

WILSON

Wilson did a little of everything during his time at The River. As a freshman, the versatile 6-foot, 190-pound athlete played mostly defensive back, where he made three tackles as a reserve.

Wilson moved to receiver during the offseason and immediately found a home on the offensive side of the ball. In 2019, Wilson led PRCC with 27 receptions, 290 yards and two touchdowns — including a 23-yard score in the final seconds of the season opener at Itawamba. Wilson also ended up carrying the ball 10 times for 39 yards with a touchdown. Additionally, Wilson returned one kick 12 yards and five punts for 91 yards.

"I'm really excited about signing with DSU. I want to thank the coaches for giving me an opportunity to play for them. The coaching staff, facilities and the campus were great. They made me feel like I was at home already," Wilson said. "I'm just ready to be a part of something great."

Wilson continued: "I enjoyed my time at PRCC. I want to thank the coaches for giving me an opportunity to become a Wildcat. As a student athlete at PRCC, I have grown into a better person on and off the field as well as in the classroom."

WOMACK

Womack recorded 10 tackles as a freshman to go along with ½ a sack and three TFLs. This season, the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Womack totaled 27 tackles and tied for the team lead with five sacks. He also registered six TFLs and one rumble recovery.

"I had a great time at PRCC and it's time to continue my journey at Bethune-Cookman," he said.
