Pearl River prepares to host Hinds in season finale

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — The Pearl River football team looks to close out its season on a high note Thursday as south division foe Hinds makes the trip to Dobie Holden Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Wildcats will hold sophomore day festivities before the contest.

Pearl River (2-6; 0-6) is coming off of a 48-23 loss to Southwest.

"Last week was extremely disappointing," head coach Seth Smith said. "Regardless of record, I feel like our play on the field has improved over the last four weeks, but we went out and were really bad defensively. The ironic thing about it is that our defense has carried us this season. If you would've told me we had 23 points at halftime, I'd think we were in business. The message for the last game of the year is just to keep fighting."

Latreal Jones (Taylorsville) and Tavion Smith (Hattiesburg; Oak Grove) continue to lead the way in receiving. Jones leads the team in catches with 19 and is second on the team in yards with 214. Smith is second in catches with 14 and is first in yards with 231.

SCOUTING HINDS
Hinds (6-2; 4-1) enters the week after a dominant 52-14 win against East Central.

The Eagles boast one of the most balanced offenses in the MACCC, passing for 212.8 yards per game and running for 231 yards per game.

"They're a very well-coached team with very good players," Smith said. "Schematically, they do a great job. I look at this game a lot like the Jones game. If we turn the ball over then they'll embarrass us, but if we protect the football, I think we genuinely that we will have a chance in the fourth quarter. If we play defense like we played last week, I think they'll blow us out of the stadium. I have no doubt we will go out and fight on Thursday."

BeSean McCray leads the team in passing with 844 yards and six touchdowns. He's also chipped in 199 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

Dajon Richard is the leader in the run game, carrying the ball 72 times for 437 yards and three touchdowns.

Jakarius Caston's 14 catches, 217 yards and two touchdowns all lead the Eagles.
