WESSON, Miss.— Pearl River's women dropped an opportunity to sweep its season series against Copiah-Lincoln on Thursday, falling at Mullen Gymnasium 64-45.

The frustrating performance snapped a five-game winning streak for PRCC (12-5 overall, 5-3 MACJC).

PRCC took the attack to Co-Lin (14-3, 5-3) on Dec. 3 and came away with a 57-54. Coach Scotty Fletcher felt Co-Lin responded on Thursday and looked like a more motivated squad.

"They were ready to play. I knew they would be. That's a good team and quality opponent," he said.

The Lady Wildcats were held to just 36 percent shooting from the floor and made 3 of 19 3-point attempts.

"We got stagnant against their zone and couldn't get the ball in behind their front line," Fletcher said. "We tried to attack with screens and ball movement wasn't as good tonight."

SLOW START

Twice the Lady Wildcats fell behind only to rally to get back in the game. Co-Lin opened the game with an 8-0 run, but 3-pointers from Jakia Harper (Jackson; Provine) and Mychala "Pooh" Linzy (Clinton), plus another jumper from Harper, helped PRCC claw back into the game. The late run pulled the Lady Wildcats within two, down 10-8 after the first quarter.

Co-Lin opened the second quarter on another sizable run, opening up a 24-8 advantage. PRCC once again responded. Led by four points from Meah Monroe (Reserve, La; East St. John), PRCC trailed 31-21 at the half. Two more times in the third quarter PRCC pulled within eight points of Co-Lin, but the Wolves pulled away in the final frame to put the game away.

"In order for us to win, the girls who play need to contribute," Fletcher said. "Back to back games we scored under 50 points. That's not going to be enough."

PRCC LEADERS

Monroe led PRCC with a 10-point performance. She also pulled in five rebounds. Dywana Parker (Gulfport) and Harper both added nine points. Linzy chipped in seven.

Elexis Peyton (Jackson; Provine) was held without a basket but pulled in a team-high eight rebounds.

"We have to find a way for her to play better against quality opponents," Fletcher said of Peyton. "Yes, she had almost 10 boards, but when you don't score and you're a sophomore who got into foul trouble early and turned the ball over … it's very uncharacteristic."

POSITIVE TAKEAWAY

Fletcher made a point to applaud PRCC's bench.

"Our bench energy never dropped tonight," he said. "I didn't see a group of girls dropping their head and pouting. They didn't stop believing."

PRCC returns to the court at 5:30 p.m. Monday for a home tilt at Marvin R. White Coliseum against East Central. The voice of the Wildcats, Carey Meitzler, will call the game on WRJW 1320 AM. PRCC dropped the previous tilt against ECCC at Decatur 75-67 in overtime. 

"They're going to be very tough. Their guard play is really good and they have a good post player," Fletcher said. "We're going to have to be big on the glass."
