No. 3 Pearl River adds three more postseason awards

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — The MACCC Champion Pearl River baseball team recently added hardware to its collection after the announcement that three Wildcats were named to the Region 23 Gold Glove Team.

Among those honored were Dalton Cummins (Seminary), John Griffin Bell (Mobile; Faith Academy) and Tate Parker (Gulfport; West Harrison).

The Wildcats finished the season as one of the top defensive teams in the country, finishing second in team fielding percentage (.969). Among teams that played at least 20 games, the Wildcats committed the seventh-lowest number of errors in the nation with 37.

"One of the strengths of our team this year was our defense," coach Michael Avalon said. "Any time you can defend, you have a chance to be successful in baseball. This was our best defensive team that we have had at Pearl River. Obviously, these young men had a lot to do with that."

"I'm thankful they put in the work and took pride in becoming elite defenders."

The gold glove team is comprised of those with the highest fielding percentage at their position.

Cummins played a number of positions for the Wildcats throughout the season but spent most of his time at third base. He had a fielding percentage of .944 and made just five errors in 90 total chances.

Bell was the prototypical slick fielding shortstop for the Wildcats. Out of 131 total chances, he made just 9 errors. He finished the season with a .931 fielding percentage.

Parker often showed off his range by tracking down flyballs hit deep into the gap. He finished the season with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. He also recorded one outfield assist.
